IN BRIEF: UC Clermont upsets the #2 seed in the first contest of the USCAA Women's DII National Championship. Penn State Hazleton held the lead from the 2:58 mark in the second quarter, until a Marie Lawson three pointer at the four minute mark in the fourth quarter.  Kelsey Finn and Emily Frye would go on to make a combined seven free throws to capture the lead and move on to the semi-finals.

 

ON THE COURT

  • The back and forth game was a defensive battle, seeing UC Clermont shoot 31% from the field, and Penn State Hazleton only 27.5%.
  • UC Clermont jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the opening three minutes of the game, before seeing Penn State Hazleton go on a 9-4 run to leave the first quarter tied at 11.
  • The score was tied between the Cougars and Lions 10 times during the contest.
  • UC Clermont outscored Hazleton by 12 in the fourth quarter.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • 34 of 61 UC Clermont points were scored by freshmen (Freson, Frye, Brand, Martin)
  • Penn State Hazleton had two players with double-doubles – Alexis Daly (12 pts, 13 reb) and Kamryn Dodd (12 pts, 11 reb).
  • UC Clermont was led by freshman point guard Emily Frye, who had 12 points, three assists, and five steals. 
  • UC Clermont won, despite losing the battle of the boards 61 to 52.
